The Saint Piran cycling academy supports talented young riders from Cornwall and Devon. Coming from the South West has historically been a disadvantage for chasing a top level cycling career, but our aim is to demystify this route and to give the support needed to make the next step up. Often cyclists who have missed out on the ‘Rayner’ fund or the very limited and track focused GB team will be left without a clearly defined pathway to progress along. Without this it’s easy for riders to get sidelined and lose focus, creating an environment where very few manage to deliver on the promise they showed in the Junior ranks. The need to work and other distractions simply make pursuing the dream impossible for many. Our aim is to develop these cyclists so they can realize their goal of becoming professionals. In varying degrees we provide coaching, equipment, racing and travel expenses to those who need it most. Our riders benefit from racing in a well organised team environment, learning from more experienced competitors such as former professional JTL. Our riders must also be in employment or education as we realise that a career in cycling is uncertain and they must be prepared for life outside of the sport.
