Fabian Cancellara, 2013 Ronde Van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix champion, will ride for Trek Bicycle’s recently announced WorldTour team, debuting in 2014. Cancellara confirmed via Twitter that he will be a part of the world's newest cycling team for the next three years.
"There was a lot of speculation around my professional future in the last couple of weeks - even months,” said the Swiss powerhouse. “That's why I'm really happy to confirm that I will stay with the Trek family. Trek has been very close to me over the last three years, for example in the development of the Domane. This is a big opportunity for me as a bike rider and it will allow me to develop even more on the sporting side. Because that's what I'm in for: winning bike races, not sitting out until I retire. I'm motivated to get the maximum out of my career and I'm really proud it's going to be on a Trek!"
"I think it's hard to overestimate the importance and necessity of a company like Trek taking on such a huge role in cycling," continued Cancellara. "Bike brands have always been around, but what Trek is doing is great for cycling. To me, it shows courage and a big sense of responsibility to do this. I want to be part of this new project and I have no doubt that it's going to be great!"
While plans for the team are still in development, Trek Vice President Joe Vadeboncoeur promises that the team's spring efforts will focus on the sport's biggest early season spotlights. "We're looking to build a team that is a perennial force in the classics, and who better to work with than the King himself?" said Vadeboncoeur. "Great Athletes Ride Trek is something we believe in and Fabian exemplifies the type of athlete that we are looking to partner with."
After announcing his commitment to the team via Twitter, Cancellara answered questions on the decision and a variety of other topics from fans and journalists using the #askFabian hashtag.
The new team, announced by Trek and RADIOSHACK LEOPARD TREK on June 26, was formed when Trek acquired the team’s WorldTour license from Leopard SA. Trek is currently seeking partners for the new team and looks forward to presenting team plans to potential sponsors. RADIOSHACK LEOPARD TREK will operate under current management throughout the remainder of 2013.
