Introducing: Morpher cycle helmet

  • Monday 4th November 2013

Many of the best ideas are often the simplest and that’s definitely true in the case of the Morpher. This new innovation aimed at making cycling safer is launched today and, after taking a look at the design, you might well be wondering why nobody ever thought of the idea before. It’s a simple, but very effective folding cycle helmet.

With research showing that almost 20,000 cycling accidents occur every year here in the UK alone, it’s still something of a shock to see many cyclists pedalling on the roads (and also the pavements) minus any kind of head protection. As an example, some 93% of Londoner’s who hire bikes don’t wear helmets, while 26% of people who own a bicycle in the capital don’t wear protective headgear either.

A flat pack cycle helmet could be the both practical and a lifesaver. We think it's a great idea, especially for commuters who need to minimise bulk.
Of course, traipsing around with a regular cycling helmet can be a pain, especially if you haven’t got anywhere safe and secure to leave it. So having one that can fold flat and be stored away in just about any kind of space, be it an office drawer or backpack, is a real boon. The idea is just one of many to have come from the brain of UK inventor Jeff Woolf OBE, who has twice been awarded the ‘British Inventor of the Year’ accolade.

The technology that underpins the design has been patented worldwide, resulting in a bike helmet that can effectively be folded in half when it’s not being used. The concept has been so well received that it has so far received three international innovation and design awards. A world first, the flat-folding Morpher helmet has just been launched via an Indiegogo funding campaign that began on 1 November. If successful, it is hoped to have Morpher on sale from spring 2014, with a children’s version available later in the year.

The innovative helmet can be easily packed into a laptop bag or rucksack

“Some years ago, I survived a horrific cycling accident,” comments Woolf speaking from personal experience on why he pushed ahead with the helmet project. “My helmet saved my life. Since then I have been aware of the increasingly large number of cyclists taking to the streets without helmets and, with my experience in inventing, I wanted to see if I could help reverse this trend.”

“I am delighted to announce the launch of Morpher’s Indiegogo campaign, providing the opportunity for people to be involved in the creation of Morpher and to own one of the first folding helmets in the world. Morpher helmets will fold up small enough to fit into a fork bag of typical laptop carrier. With more and more people riding every day, Morpher helmets will help to protect cyclists and save lives around the world.”
