Clear space in your diary, dust off your camping kit and reboot your spirit of adventure- 2013 is going to be a busy year for South West mountain bike racers!
Taking a leaf out of Nigella’s food / porn cookery book, here’s our recipe for the perfect Juice Lubes Jam Sponge:-
Step one. Take 3 ounces of cross-country racing. Our current favourite wholegrain blend would be Wheal Maid, Redruth on April 7th,Newnham Park (Fully Sussed’s home from home) on May 12th and Woodbury Common (the Juice Lubes homeboy turf) on June 16th. All the thrills and spills you have come to expect from the last 3 years of SW series.
Step two. Sieve together with some mystery ingredients. A smidge of Porteath dirt crit, a pinch of short course xc and a dollop of Hot Laps, all with series points, you’ll need to be in it to win it next year. This isn’t a space cake though – we will be drug testing.
Step three. Bake in a pre-heated oven, provided by the race furnace of the British Mountain Bike Series round at Wheal Maid, Redruth on April 27th and 28th. You’ll have ridden the course on April 7th, now compare your lap times against the Olympians! As the great Bruce Willis said, this will be big-badda-boom.
Step four. The filling! Take the biggest spoon you can find and ladle on copious quantities of Juice Lubes Jam. Held in Newnham Park on May 11th and 12th, come and enjoy a weekend in the finest race venue in the UK. Relaxed atmosphere, enduro, short course and xc racing plus a picnic table full of jam related tomfoolery. Camp over, bring the family – except for that annoying uncle of yours.
Step five. The topping. Top off the whole artery-clogging affair with a dusting of Filthy Foxes Dirty Weekender, also in Newnham Park on May 4th and 5th. Think early morning outdoor circuits, then a day of mountain bike coaching, skills tuition, maintenance seminars, a women only 5km run in the evening followed by wine and cup-cakes and a ‘meet the athletes’ Q+A session for those that want to take their training further. All to a mellow, non-testosterone fuelled soundtrack. Sunday will be the race day - an enduro format on laps of Newnham with the emphasis on fun, fast and flowing. Step forward Nigella – back off, Nigel.
And there you have your Juice Lubes Jam Sponge, ideally served with a mug of Fully Sussed - full caffeine, white, no sugar.
Online entry will be up and running by Christmas 2012.
