The Tour of Wessex sponsored by Trek Bicycles will welcome thousands of riders from across the globe between the 24-26th May 2014, all in search of the South West of England's most famous climbs and cycling terrain.

"The Tour of Wessex is an event that offers a unique format for riders, one that is unlike any other sportive. It's an event that we're happy to be part of, as it provides an opportunity for us to contribute to a festive atmosphere that goes beyond a typical one day event” says Nigel Roberts, director of Trek UK.

Kellie Parsons from Shimano says: “Shimano is synonymous with the world’s leading cycling events so our partnership with the Tour of Wessex is an obvious one. Not only does the Tour give amateur cyclists an insight into the endeavours and hardships of stage racing, but with our Shimano neutral support service they can now enjoy the same back-up that professional riders expect, helping participants focus on crossing the finish line each day with a smile on their face.”

Sports nutrition company OTE Sports have also partnered with the 2014 Tour to deliver specific products and advice that will help entrants maximise their performance.

“OTE Sports are delighted to announce their partnership with the Tour of Wessex 2014. As the official sports nutrition partner we look forward to helping all riders successfully fuel their way round each day. Correct fuelling and refuelling strategies using sports nutrition products have a vital role to play in multi stage challenges such as this so we’ll be right on hand to help riders achieve their PBs!” said co-founder Peter Slater.

“Enhancing the Tour of Wessex is always top priority so to partner with Trek UK is extremely exciting for us, helping underline just how unique the Tour of Wessex really is. We haven’t stopped there though, with 2014 seeing the introduction of our new official ‘Tour of Wessex Training Weekends’ and our ‘Tour of Wessex Training Camp Majorca’. Both concepts are designed to help riders develop fitness levels and group riding skills before conquering the Tour of Wessex in style alongside thousands of others!”

The ‘Tour of Wessex Training Weekends’ will involve rides using sections of the 2014 stages, with the chance to book a demo ride on Trek’s latest bikes thanks to live2ride. Confirmed dates are January 25-26th, February 22-23rd and March 29-30th, with a Team Support Vehicle providing neutral service throughout.

Working with Andy Cook Cycling, the ‘Tour of Wessex Training Camp Majorca’ takes place from the 1-15th March 2014. Based in the North of the Island, the camp will feature dedicated training plans and four ride groups each day which will cater for varying abilities. Each ride will be accompanied by ride leaders and vehicle support.

During the Tour weekend itself, the Compex Chillax Zone will be the place for post ride recovery, with riders able to experience Compex’s latest eloctrostimulation recovery products in comfort thanks to giant bean bags, straw bale tables and soft sheepskin rugs. Adding a real West Country flavour will be official Tour of Wessex Food Supplier Williams Supermarket. This Somerton-based family business will be laying on plenty of stunning local produce and treats to help re-fuel hungry riders each day.

Riders’ friends and families will also be able to keep track of progress thanks to timing specialists Map My Tracks, with a live-tracking big screen showing rider positions as they conquer each day’s ride.

Based in the market town of Somerton, the Ancient Royal Capital of Wessex, Tour riders will head out each morning to enjoy stages specifically designed to showcase the best roads, landscapes and landmarks Somerset offers. They’ll also weave through parts of Dorset and Wiltshire before circling back to Somerton each day.

Thanks to Rotary Charity Fundraisers, riders will once again be able to experience the Tour for free in return for raising funds and also making a welcome return in 2014 will be the medium stage distances each day, first introduced in the 2013 Tour. A real hit with first-time sportive riders and those just wanting a great day in the saddle, they are here to stay and allow entrants to ride all 3 days, any 2 days or opt for 1 day, with Standard and Medium Routes remaining unchanged for 2014.

These will see riders taking-on the likes of Cheddar Gorge and King Alfred’s Tower on Stage 1. Stage 2 heads south toward Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, West Lulworth and Corfe Castle while Stage 3 winds its way West from Somerton toward Exmoor before climbing up the famous Porlock Toll Road.

Testament to the draw of the event, 2013’s edition saw the highest ever number of riders choosing to cover 335 miles over the 3 days. 1-day and 2-day participants also helped boost numbers to a record high for the Tour. Now in its 9th year, the 2014 Tour looks set to be another record.
